Understanding Trigger Point Therapy: When Massage Doesn’t Look Like Massage

Writer: Danika TkacikDanika Tkacik

When people think of massage, they often imagine long, flowing strokes, warm oil, and a deep sense of relaxation. While that style of massage has its place, trigger point therapy is something entirely different. It might not look or feel like traditional massage, but for those struggling with chronic pain, tension, or limited mobility, it can be life-changing.

What Are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are hyper-irritable spots in tight bands of muscle fibers. You might recognize them as those knots you feel in your shoulders or the aching spots that send pain to seemingly unrelated areas. These points can cause referred pain, meaning they create discomfort in a different part of the body than where the trigger point itself is located. For example, a trigger point in your ribs may be responsible for your chronic neck pain.

Trigger points form for various reasons - stress, poor posture, repetitive movements, injuries, or overuse - and they don't always go away on their own. Left untreated, they can create chronic pain patterns, affecting how you move and function.

How Trigger Point Therapy Works

Unlike traditional massage, trigger point therapy is highly focused and often involves direct pressure on the problem area. This can look and feel very different from a typical relaxation massage:

  • Sustained Pressure: Instead of broad strokes, I apply targeted pressure to release the knot and allow the muscle to reset.

  • Minimal Oil or Lotion: This isn't a glide-based technique, so I often work with dry skin or minimal lubrication for precision.

  • Communication & Adjustments: You might feel a "good pain" or tenderness as we work through the trigger points, but the goal is never to create unbearable discomfort. We adjust as needed to ensure the most effective results.

  • Referred Sensations: You may feel sensations in other areas of your body as we release the point. This is a sign we're on the right track!

The Profound Impact of Trigger Point Work

While trigger point therapy doesn't always feel like the soothing, rhythmic experience of a traditional massage, it has profound effects on pain relief and movement. Clients often notice:

  • Improved mobility and range of motion

  • Reduced chronic pain and tension

  • Relief from headaches, back pain, and nerve-related issues

  • Better posture and muscular balance

Many clients walk in with discomfort they've been carrying for years and walk out feeling lighter, looser, and more free in their bodies - sometimes after just one session.

Is Trigger Point Therapy Right for You?

If you have persistent pain, tension that doesn't go away with stretching, or areas of discomfort that seem resistant to other treatments, trigger point therapy could be exactly what your body needs. It's not about chasing symptoms but addressing the root cause.

At Soully Aware Massage & Wellness, my approach is both clinical and intuitive, using my knowledge of the body's structure while listening deeply to what your muscles are trying to tell us. Whether you're an athlete, a manual laborer, or someone carrying stress in your body, this work can help restore balance and ease.
